International Sport Games of Tricolore

The International Sport Games of Tricolore are organized by a Committee formed by members of CONI, Municipality and Province of Reggio Emilia, E35 Foundation for International Cooperation, Reggio Emilia’s Foundation for Sport, Emilia-Romagna Region, Chamber of Commerce of Reggio Emilia together with CSI – Centro Sportivo Italiano, UISP – Unione Italiana Sport per Tutti and C.I.P – Italian Paralympics Committee. Reggio Emilia, is one of the provincial capitals of the Emilia Romagna Region; it is located between the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the Po Valley in one of the most enterprising area of Italy and Europe. The city has about 170,000 inhabitants, of which 18.2% of foreign origin, coming from 127 countries; for this it has been chosen by the Council of Europe to represent Italy in the Intercultural Cities network. Municipality of Reggio Emilia for years focus its actions on welfare policies, services and education, and is known worldwide for the experience of the Reggio Emilia Approach developed in Infant -Toddler Centres and Preschool of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia. Reggio Emilia has always invested on international relations with several cities around the world demonstrating a particular sensitiveness for the promotion of human rights and sustainable development. Since the ‘60 Reggio Emilia has played a key role in solidarity and cooperation with the peoples of Southern Africa, for the affirmation of the struggle for independence and against apartheid. This history is preserved in the Reggio Africa Archive. In 2011 the City of Reggio Emilia, along with institutions, associations and citizens engaged in cooperation with Southern Africa, formed the Reggio Africa Table. To strengthen international partnerships the City, along with local organizations, established the Foundation E- 35 for International and European planning, to support the international promotion of the territory.

At 5th edition of International Sport Games of Tricolore more over 3,000 youngsters, aged between 11 and 17, took part in matches and competitions in 33 different sport disciplines, including Paralympics and traditional games. The event was attended by 700 foreign athletes coming from 14 countries and 16 cities across the world. During this sport, cultural and institutional event, involving several associations of the area, a lot of sport and cultural events were organized. It was a big sport event but, above all, an opportunity to promote among young people the values of peace, solidarity, tolerance, mutual respect and friendship as values erecting over every kind of membership. The issues of fairness and fair play that young athletes should follow are naturally exportable in their relationship; the respect for others is practised in front of the opponent, but also to the neighbour; the team spirit is built playing in the same team, winning and losing together.

The sense of belonging to the city and the nation is also built reaching sport results and proudly waving the own flag. During the International Sport Games of Tricolore, by confronting in sport competition and meeting at the table at the Sport Village refectory, listening to a conference or dancing in the street, youngsters know each other, can grow, compare and learn how to win honestly and lose without fear. They experience and learn the universal rules of sports and life and the values that bring together the different communities.

Youngsters who come to Reggio Emilia to take part in the International Sports Games of Tricolore come from twin cities or involved in European projects, international cooperation and development with the City of Reggio Emilia. They are the directors of the cities of origin that accompany the athletes bringing with them their social, cultural and artistic experiences that will then be shared with all the young and dialogue over the sport.

In conclusion the event offered the chance to test, by living all together in the Sport Village, taking part in races, parties and moment for reflection, the topics of integration and mutual knowledge of young people from different backgrounds and with different abilities, as well as focusing attention on the role of sports as a means of growth and education, in a period when one Italian child out of five plays no sport.
